Pembroke Dock Community School is a Lead Partner School within The Athrofa Professional Learning Partnership (APLP). This is a partnership of schools and Yr Athrofa working together to design and deliver programmes of professional learning for initial teacher education.
The partnership provides high-quality training routes for the next generation of primary and secondary teachers in Wales. Our partner schools include; Monkton Priory School, Lamphey School, Gelliswick School, Mary Immaculate Catholic School, Holy Name Catholic School, St Francis Catholic School, The Federation of Tavernspite and Templeton School, Cleddau Reach School, St Oswald’s School and Milford Haven Community Primary School.
Our Vision for the Partnership
Driven by our mission statement of ‘transforming teaching together’, our vision is to achieve a single, coherent curriculum for Initial Teacher Education (ITE) through a transformative and collaborative partnership.
By realising this vision, we educate teachers who embody professional values, are confident in transforming the lives of learners for the better, who understand that learning to teach is a complex process and who see ITE as the first step in career long professional learning.
We are rooted in the Welsh context, preparing teachers for Wales and beyond.
Our Mission
The APLP realises its vision through an integrated approach that combines multiple domains of knowledge, connects theory and practice and fosters research dispositions.
Our progressive curriculum is structured around taught modules enabling student-teachers to develop an understanding of learners and their development, effective pedagogical choices, the role of schools in their communities, skills of enquiry, Welsh Language capability.
In parallel, student-teachers gain practical experience within supportive networks of partner schools with skilled mentoring. This is enhanced by bridging activities that explicitly connect theory and practice; elective placements focusing on the skills of enquiry, optional modules and specialist pathways supporting the development of personal interests and specialities; and alternative experiences and phase swap placements that support a deeper understanding of the wider education system.
