What is Elsa?<\/strong><\/p>

ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant) is a school-based programme that helps children and young people develop their emotional wellbeing and social skills. It is widely used in schools across Wales as part of their support for learners’ emotional and mental health. ELSAs are trained members of school staff, usually teaching assistants, who work under the supervision of an Educational Psychologist.<\/p>

Support targets are agreed and reviewed regularly<\/p>

    Is ELSA the same as counselling?<\/strong><\/p>

    No. ELSA is not counselling or therapy. It is an educational intervention that helps children develop emotional literacy and coping skills within the school environment. If a child requires more specialist support, the school may discuss other services with parents.<\/p>

    How are children identified for ELSA?<\/strong><\/p>

    Schools use their knowledge of the child, along with discussions with parents and staff, to identify learners who may benefit from ELSA support.
